About Me

Hi!! My name is Emily and I am a current graduate student at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. I hope that in the near future that I will have my own classroom one day. Here are some more fun facts about me:

What I Love:

  • My Dogs

Their names are Oakley and Tank. They aren’t actually my own dogs, they are my brother and future sister-in-laws, but they basically live at our house. They best part is that they are actually the best of friends and love to play with each other.

Oakley, is a Golden Retriever and we got her a couple of years ago. She is the calmest dog and the most happiest dog I have ever met. She is definitely a people person and will go up to anybody with the expectation of being petted.

And finally we just recently added Tank into our family in March and he is a Great Dane. His father was eight feet tall when he stood on his hind legs, so we have no reason to believe that Tank will be any different. He is still only a few months old, but is already so big, he loves to play tug-a-war and he loves to cuddle with you when you lay down.

  • Roller Derby

I have been playing roller derby for a little over two years now and I love it. It challenges me to become the best version of myself and I have met some of my best friends playing it. I get lots of nasty bruises, but I love showing them off to people. Roller derby isn’t always just about hitting people, but requires you to be very strategic in how to score points.

  • Coffee

I can’t even express in words how much I love coffee and it is funny because I didn’t even like it until I came to college. There is now a day that won’t go by that I don’t at least have one cup. I even work at a coffee shop now, which is a good thing because now I get all of my cups for free!

How I Look:

  1. Tall (I am 5ft. 8in and when I put on my skates for roller derby I stand right at 6ft.)
  2. Sandy Brown Hair (my hair is a majority brown with blonde highlights in them)
  3. Brown Eyes (if you put them in the sunlight they turn blue and green though)
  4. Big Boned (some people might be ashamed that they have thicker thighs and not a flat stomach, but I love my body, it is very strong)

How I Act:

  • Humorous– I love to be funny all of the time and I love making people laugh. I think everyone looks much more beautiful with smiles on their face and if I can do it for them that day I consider it an honor.
  • Hard Worker-I was told at one time that because of my disability that I would never go to college and so from that point on I swore to myself that I would go to college and work my butt off and succeed. And here we are with me about to graduate with my masters degree in Reading Education.
  • Loving-I have rarely met a person that I don’t like. I am a firm believer that if you put love into this world, it will deliver it back. I never judge a person and always show love to people because you never know if they really might need some that day.
  • Active– I am fit and active, but I love being an activist for equal rights and human rights. I have had the pleasure of attending a few protest throughout my college years to fight for things such as women’s rights, LGBTQIA rights, teachers pay, and for the Black Lives Matter movement.

Things I don’t Like:

  • I don’t like it when people put half the effort into their school work and assignments and we still get the same grade. I have always been highly motivated and a hard worker because of uncontrollable situations that were place in my path. So when people are just lazy and don’t care about these things it bothers me just a little bit.
  • I absolutely cannot stand rude customers. I have worked in the food industry for about four years now and I have run across plenty of them. Sometimes they get mad at things that are completely out of my control, but they don’t seem to care much. I am never allowed to be rude to a customer and I never am, so why should they be allowed to be rude to me?
  • I do not like sweet and unsweet tea. People ask me all the time how can I be from the south if I don’t like sweet tea? To me it taste very bland and I very much over drank it as a kid and just don’t really prefer the taste anymore.
  • My biggest pet peeve is when people crack their bones. I have never been able to do this and to me it just sounds painful and unnatural. Anytime I hear someone doing it a get a chill all the way down my spine and it makes me shudder.

What Else You Should Know About Me:

  • My family is very important to me. I come from quite a large one and minus a few relatives who live in Florida, most of them live no further than 15 minutes from me so I always grew up having them around.

  • I have the opportunity to go and teach in Africa starting in August of 2019 for six months. I have always loved traveling and this opportunity is something that I definitely cannot pass up.
  • I love mysteries! My favorite shows and books to read definitely revolve around anything that has to do with a good whodunit. My favorite part is to try and solve it before the end of the show or the book before the culprit is reviled. If this is something that you are into as well, I definitely have some great recommendations! My person favorites are Murder, She Wrote and anything by Agatha Christy!
